Frequently Asked Questions

What is Giving Day, and why does UChicago do it?

Giving Day is 24 hours of support for a cause near and dear to our hearts: the University of Chicago’s students, faculty, and world-changing research. Giving Day also magnifies the power of your gift—at any level—through targeted matches and challenges from generous donors. This high-impact support helps UChicago’s schools and divisions close the gaps not filled by tuition or endowment funds.

Why should I participate in Giving Day?

Giving Day is an opportunity to come together as a community and demonstrate the power of collective philanthropy. Supporting faculty and students in their quest to define future inquiry and its impact on lives around the globe requires a high level of commitment from a dedicated community. Every gift—and every supporter, including alumni, parents, and friends—helps ensure that the University of Chicago will remain among the world’s great centers of discovery, education, and innovation.

When should I give?

Gifts given from noon to noon (CDT) April 9–10 will count toward Giving Day. Only payments processed within this time frame or other specially designated advance gifts count toward the total.

How do I decide where to give?

There are many giving opportunities available during Giving Day. Make a gift to any area of the University you are passionate about and 100 percent of the gift will go there.

For a full list of giving opportunities, visit the online giving page.

Is it safe to make my gift online?

The security of your information is very important to us. We use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology to protect the security of your online gift information.

Can I send a gift by mail?

Yes. Please send your gift to the following address:

Attn: Gift Administration
5235 South Harper Court
Suite 400
Chicago, IL 60615

Please make your checks payable to “The University of Chicago” and write “Giving Day” and the area you’d like to support on the memo line.

Can I give stock in support of Giving Day?

You can always give stock; however, due to the short time frame, stock gifts may not count toward Giving Day.

Can I make a recurring gift?

You can make a recurring gift by visiting the giving page and selecting “I would like to make a recurring gift.” Please note that only the first payment, processed between noon and noon (CDT) April 9–10, will count toward Giving Day.

What is UChicago’s tax-exempt status?

UChicago is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. All gifts to the University—made during Giving Day and throughout the year—are tax-deductible.
