Description
Founded in 1892, The Chicago Maroon has been a leading news publication serving the University of Chicago community, Hyde Park, and beyond. It is a financially independent publication that provides coverage of campus events, local developments, and issues facing the community. The Maroon’s staff is dedicated to using its platform to support and amplify marginalized voices on campus through themed and special issues. For example, the annual Black History Month Special Issue, launched last winter, highlights the rich stories, perspectives, and contributions of the Black community at UChicago and in Hyde Park. Whether reporting on the impacts of large institutions on marginalized communities, documenting the resurgence of Chicago’s monk parakeets, or writing about how people celebrate and spark joy, the Maroon looks forward to continuing its historic role as UChicago’s and Hyde Park’s news source.
Donations are applied to...
Your support of the Maroon on Giving Day will be applied to the publication’s operating budget, which supports the Maroon’s keystone role of informing the UChicago and Hyde Park communities. Beyond printing and distribution costs, this budget supports development initiatives within the Maroon community, such as reporting grants, fellowships, and staff events. The funding will be applied to the creation of an endowment to perpetuate the Maroon’s financial stability. It will also contribute to the introduction of new special issues and the continuation of existing special issues on topics including Black History Month, first-generation and low-income students, and the migrant crisis.
Why are donations necessary?
To remain editorially independent, The Chicago Maroon must generate its own funding and remain financially independent from the University, something that can be achieved only with the help of your gifts. The Maroon’s staff is composed of more than 200 students who are dedicated to highlighting voices across the UChicago community and preserving the integrity of print journalism in a digital age. Gifts will support their mission of providing the community with impartial, in-depth reporting on the issues that matter. This Giving Day, help the Maroon continue supporting not only its writers and staff, but also the UChicago community, the Hyde Park area, and beyond.
